Hello from MeSO Med Spa! Melasma is one of the most common pigmentation concerns among women. Once it appears, it tends to linger — which is why so many people struggle with it. Many spend time and money on laser treatments and brightening facials, but often the results don’t fully meet expectations. So why does melasma form in the first place, and how can we treat and manage it effectively? Let’s take a closer look. What Is Melasma? Mixed melasma. It usually worsens during the summer and fades slightly in winter. Although it is far more common in women, around 10% of cases occur in men as well. Because melasma darkens with sun exposure, ultraviolet (UV) light plays a major role in its development. Causes of Melasma Surprisingly, the exact cause of melasma is still not fully understood. What’s known is that genetics, hormones, and environmental factors interact with one another to influence how melasma appears and worsens. ※ Melasma in Men In men, melasma has been reported following the use of testosterone-stimulating agents or Hormone balance support therapy that increases hormone secretion. Types of Melasma Melasma is generally classified into three patterns: ① Centrofacial type — affects the forehead, nose, upper lip, cheeks, and chin ② Malar type — involves the cheeks and bridge of the nose ③ Mandibular type — appears along the jawline The color of pigmentation also varies depending on how deep the pigment lies within the skin: ① Brown — epidermal pigmentation (closer to the surface) ② Blue-gray — dermal pigmentation (deeper layer) ③ Brown-gray — mixed type (both epidermal and dermal) These differences are important because they affect how the skin responds to treatment. Review of skin whitening agents When it comes to pigmentation, melanin is the key player. Melanin is a natural pigment produced by melanocytes in the basal layer of the epidermis.
